Cellist Ben Fryxell is a seasoned veteran of the concert stage, at home as a soloist, orchestral player, and chamber musician. Since 2022, he has served as Associate Principal Cello of the Jacksonville Symphony, where he was granted tenure less than a year after joining. Before that, he was a Fellow with the New World Symphony, where he played as a principal cellist under conductors such as Michael Tilson Thomas, HK Gruber, and Susanna Mälkki. He performed with New World and conductor Matthias Pintscher as a soloist in 2022, playing Bernd Alois Zimmermann's "Canto di Speranza". Ben holds a special interest and strong skillset in contemporary music, and loves how many new sound worlds we can be exposed to by composers of our time. He was invited to be a New Fromm Player at the Tanglewood Music Center in 2022, where he was re-engaged the following summer. During his time in that role, he worked closely with composers such as Reena Esmail, George Lewis, Nico Muhly, Joan Tower, and many others.
Ben is also a passionate educator. In addition to teaching private cello lessons, he has also been sought out as a sectional coach, as well as a music theory pedagogue. He received his Bachelor of Music from The Juilliard School, where he studied with Natasha Brofsky, and worked for the Music Theory and Analysis Department as a Teaching Assistant and Tutor. He then studied at the New England Conservatory of Music for his Master of Music degree, where he was a pupil of Yeesun Kim. He held another teaching assistantship there, this time working as a keyboard harmony teacher. In addition to being a cellist, Ben is a skilled pianist, conductor, composer, and arranger. He splits his time between Jacksonville, FL and the Chicago metropolitan area.
Yep! Outside of my orchestral life, I have had the pleasure of doing tons of teaching. Before moving to Jacksonville, I was a Fellow with the New World Symphony, and I taught private lessons to intermediate and advanced students through their community partnerships...both in English and in Spanish. I have also taught through my own private studio, as well as my highly-acclaimed online course for adult beginners, which has been purchased by over a thousand aspiring cellists.
I pride myself on taking a personal approach to every student, whether it's in person or on Zoom. When I really started my teaching career, the COVID-19 pandemic was raging, and in-person lessons were out of the question. So I came into my own as an educator in a virtual environment, and that means that I am able to transmit even very complex musical and technical concepts to my students in a virtual environment. So wherever you are in our world, I'd love to teach you.
Teaching cello is one of my great passions, and I've spent a LOT of time doing it, reflecting on it, and honing my skills as an educator. I've taught extensively in both English and Spanish, in person and online, one-on-one and in the classroom, cello and keyboard harmony and music theory. I'm currently taking on private students, both for regular study and for one-off/occasional lessons over Zoom.
Much of my recent teaching has been online, and I've gained the skills to be able to work effectively with students even if we're in completely different parts of the world from one another. My beliefs on teaching are relatively straightforward, and globally, it boils down to one thing: observation. That means not only taking care to spot areas where students can improve, of course, but also listening to every student, and figuring out what their needs are. How do they learn best? What can I do for them to be the most effective teacher? What can we work on together to make sure that their passion for music continues to thrive?
I also want the guidance that I provide to be available to you in perpetuity. As such, with your permission, I will record all of your lessons and make sure that you get the video files. I will also ask that after each lesson, you go back and watch the video before getting to work, and take notes...summarize what I've suggested and what we've discussed in your own words. This is a great way to help assimilate knowledge.
And the last thing I'll mention here that's also crucial: for younger students, parental/guardian involvement is critical. Being a partner in your child's learning process is a wonderful gift that you can give them. So I ask that you be engaged with their work to the best of your ability.
I’m extremely pleased with the results I’ve been able to achieve so far. I’m already playing scales and etudes, and it is attributable to Ben’s well thought out program. Ben is extremely responsive and professional...If you want to learn the cello and be good at it...I highly recommend Cello Ben."
This is a well organized, helpful course. Ben seems to really care about the students and is willing to review uploaded videos and offer helpful constructive comments to help the student progress.
Ben, thank you. You are amazing to share your gift so well. My daughter needed you, I needed you. Thank you.
